Updated: Aug 9, 2022

What is a lighting plan?

To put it simply it is a detailed, extensive plan of where lighting is going to be placed in your home, what features you are going to enhance with light, and what lighting you want to make a feature of.

Why do I need a lighting plan?

The difference that a perfectly curated lighting plan can have on a home is amazing! Having a lighting plan that is well thought out and intentional will completely elevate your space.

Lighting creates an atmosphere in the home it can make your home feel safe and grounded cozy and warm. Having a lighting plan that is designed well and takes into consideration how you live your life can help diminish sensory overload, and improve mood, well-being, and self-esteem while saving you money, and adding a layer of sophistication to your home.

Types of lighting:

A mix of ambient, task, and accent lighting can be considered for just about every room in the house. There is a lot to consider when creating a lighting plan, the functionality of the lighting in the space also the size of the space the materials used, and the effect the light will have on the room. The goal of ambient lighting is to light up the room without glare, it needs to provide a great distribution of light. Task lighting is your workhorse lighting, it is the prep areas in the kitchen, the lamp at your desk the lights in your walk-in robe. Accent lighting is all about drawing your eye to something you want to enhance or make a feature of. It is the lighting you see above a piece of artwork or lighting around a bathroom mirror.

A lighting designer:

A lighting designer understands the lighting zones in different areas of your home they take into account the function of the room. They understand the lighting zones, creating just the right balance of light as well as shadows and illuminating important features. The difference between the types of lighting may seem minimal but the importance they have on a space can be massive. Lighting design is not just for the interior of your home it's also the outside areas like the entertaining areas, garden lighting, pathway lighting, front door lighting also house lighting and security lights, and motion sensors need to be considered also.
